Became Washington State head coach in 2006-07, taking over for father Dick Bennett after serving as a WSU assistant for three years and assistant head coach for two. Cougs picked to finish last in the Pac-10 in the preseason media poll, but as of Jan. 22, 2007 stood at 16-3 and ranked No. 18 in the AP Poll, while the Coaches' Poll slotted them at No. 20 in the land.
In 1999, joined his father on the staff at the University of Wisconsin, where Dick was in the process of leading the Badgers to the 2000 Final Four. Dick Bennett retired from UW the next season, and Tony stayed on the Wisconsin staff for three years.
A standout point guard under his father at Wisconsin-Green Bay, helping lead the team to an NCAA Tournament berth and two appearances in the NIT. During his time there, UW-Green Bay was 87-34 (.719) and Tony was twice named conference player of the year. Drafted No. 35 overall in 1992, he played for the NBA's Charlotte Hornets from 1992-95, before foot and knee injuries halted his career. He then played for a pro team in New Zealand, whom he would later coach.
