Jahvid Best set an Emerald Bowl record with 186 yards rushing and two touchdowns helping the California Golden Bears to a 24-17 win over the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday night in San Francisco...
Best was named the game’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player. He broke Oregon State’s Yvenson Bernard’s Emerald Bowl record of 177 rushing yards set in 2007. On the night, Best set a new bowl record with a 42-yard rush. He also tied J.J. Arrington and Justin Forsett with 15 rushing touchdowns in a season. As well, he moved to second on the Golden Bears season rushing record list with 1,580 yards – surpassing Forsett’s 2007 season mark of 1,546 yards. He set a Cal single season- record with 8.1 yards per carry average. Best ended the season with 698 yards rushing in the final three games.
Zack Follett took home the Most Outstanding Defensive Player honor after recording a game high 9 tackles – four for loss –, two sacks, and caused the game-changing fumble by sacking and stripping Jacory Harris inside the 10 yard line with 3:28 left in the game. His two sacks set a new Emerald Bowl record. He recorded 23 tackles for loss on the year, which tied Sekou Sanyika (1998) for No. 3 on Cal’s single-season TFL list. Follett also moved into fifth-place on the school’s career TFL list with 51.
