Thompson Increasing His Options

Shaq Thompson

Sacramento (Calif.) Grant DB/WR Shaquille Thompson visited Cal last month for the Golden Bears' three-day camp, where he met fellow 2012 prospect Fresno (Calif.) Central CB Tee Shepard. The two opposed each other at the Passing Down Elite 7-on-7 Challenge last Friday night. Afterward, Thompson told us he and Shepard are talking about going to the same college…

Shaquille Thompson (6-1, 180) is the younger brother of former California All-American cornerback Syd'Quan Thompson. However, the younger Thompson hasn't penciled himself in the Golden Bears' blue and gold just yet.

With offers from USC and UCLA besides Cal, Thompson has options from some of the top programs in the Pac-10. But the interest isn't coming from West alone.

"Tennessee said that I'm atop their recruiting board for 2012," said Thompson. "They're talking about offering me. That's the only thing new for me [since June]."

He camped at Cal last month with his Grant teammates and numerous other top high school prospects. "The camp was good," said Thompson. "We got a chance to work with [DB] Coach [Al] Simmons. He taught us some new footwork that they use in college. We came back [to Grant] did that, and it made me a better corner."

Thompson competed with Team NorCal last Friday at the Passing Down Elite 7-on-7 Challenge. It was his first experience in a mixed elite 7-on7 tournament.

"The competition is good playing all the talent at quarterback, wide receiver, and cornerback from California," said Thompson.

One of the good players he opposed was Fresno (Calif.) Central cornerback Tee Shepard. Thompson met the fellow elite 2012 prospect at Cal's camp in June. "He's one of the best corners I've went against," said Thompson. "He's great competition; we'll be seeing each other soon.

"We both are talking about going to Cal with one of his other players," Thompson said while looking at B.J. Kelley and Brendon Bigelow.

Thompson says the Bears, UCLA, Tennessee are this top three. He also has an offer from UNLV.
