Rolando Jefferson (6-3, 200) touched the ball five times in last Friday night’s 21-15 loss to Visalia (Calif.) El Diamante in the Central Section Division II playoff semifinals. He had three receptions for 45 yards, one rush for 38 yards, and an 85-yard kickoff return. But he did not see the end zone.
Quarterback issues have plagued Edison all season, the main reason why Jefferson’s production fell, especially in games against good defenses that game-planned for him. What made Friday night’s defeat hard to swallow was the El Diamante could not stop Jefferson, let alone make an effort to shut him down.
Every time Jefferson had his hands on the ball, the crowd was on the edge of their seats, none for than his second half 38-yard run on an end-around. Jefferson took the ball and raced around the far side corner, racing down the sideline leaping over a pair of Miner tacklers in the midst of his run. The crowd of over 3,000 let out a collective “ooh” when he leaped over the defenders.
After watching that game, Jefferson deserves much more praise than he has received after his subpar statistical season. Nonetheless, he will get his chance to prove his worth at next months U.S. Army All-American game. It is then he says he will decide on his college destination.
