Jahvid Best rushed for a career-high 201 yards and two touchdowns leading California to a 37-16 win over Stanford in the Big Game on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium…

a few game notes…

  • Jahvid Best goes over 1,000 yards on the season. It marks the seventh consecutive season with 1,000-yard rusher under Coach Jeff Tedford.

  • Best had 72 rushing yards within the first five minutes of the game.

  • Zach Follett recorded 2.5 sacks. It is 50% of his season total coming into Saturday. He finished the game with 5 tackles for loss.

  • Cal punted just twice in its first 11 possessions. The Bears scored on six, had one end on a knee before the half, and the other two end in Kevin Riley interceptions.

  • Bryan Anger had a career long 76 yard punt, and had 75-yarder as well. He had 4 for an average of 60.2 yards per punt.

  • Riley attempted only 11 passes, completing one to himself for 6 yards. He did not complete a pass for positive yards until 7:19 left in the second quarter.

  • Stanford had three first half drives, back-to-back, of at least 10 plays and 70 yards but scored just three points. The first ended on a missed field goal, the second on a Toby Gerhart fumble at the Cal 10, and the last ended with a 20-yard just before the half.

  • For the first time this season, Cal runs a hook-n-ladder. Verran Tuck caught a Kevin Riley pass for no gain then lateral to Best, who took it 14 yards for a touchdown. Coach Tedford said in the post game press conference that they only practiced it this past Thursday.

  • Worthless Replay: A seven-yard pass from Tavi Pritchard to Ryan Whalen was called complete despite the ball hitting the ground before Whalen had possession. As soon as the Cal coaching staff saw the stadium replay and saw that it hit the ground, they rushed the field as play was stopped for review. However, the ABC television cameras did not capture a good angle of the ball hitting the ground, so the completion stood. Regardless, Cal held Toby Gerhart for no gain on the subsequent 4th-and-1 play to take possession.
