Kendricks Continues Solid Camp in Scrimmage

LB Mychal Kendricks

Mychal Kendricks was the only true linebacker recruit signed in the 2008 California Golden Bear recruiting class. The Cal linebacker unit is the deepest and most talented position on the 2008 roster. However, the true frosh has impressed in camp, and could see the field this season. We caught up with him after Thursday's scrimmage to talk about his performance and progress in camp…

Mychal Kendricks was a standout on the high school gridiron. He was both the star offensively and defensively for Fresno (Calif.) Hoover his junior and senior year. But his path to college was as a linebacker, specifically outside/weak side backer. He has great speed, but what are more impressive are his instincts.

Kendricks totaled over 170 tackles as a senior for the Patriots. This season, however, his role is limited. He is expected fill in whenever he is needed. "To support my teammate and wait my turn right now," said Kendricks.

For any true freshman there is much to take in and digest. In today's college game, redshirts are a luxury as many top programs expect true freshman to enter camp and compete for playing time. However, with so many talented experience linebackers on the Bear roster, it would be no surprise to see Kendricks sit out this season as a redshirt.

"There is a lot to learn," said Kendricks. "There always will be a lot to learn. As of right now, I am in a couple packages, so we'll see how that goes."

Kendricks played well in Thursday evening's scrimmage. While taking most reps with the second team defense, he recorded three tackles. He says the biggest difference Thursday night was the speed.

"The hitting [in the scrimmage] is normal just faster pace, just have to adapt to it," said Kendricks. "The speed [is the big difference]. They're faster. Everyone is just as fast you."

Speed is one thing Kendricks has on his size. Moreover, he says his speed has transitioned to the college game.

"Actually, the special team coach [Pete Alamar] said I had great speed," said Kendricks. "I'm hunting the ball down. I've been really working hard over the summer and I just got faster, my speed has transitioned pretty good."
