Saturday's loss to Washington wasn't such that we'll go reaching back into our archive of NASCAR stories. Yet as the Bears tally another win in the almost-but-lost column, they now find themselves in a challenge to finish the season with a winning record. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Despite a career-best 20 points from Eric Vierneisel and a better-than-usual offensive game from DeVon Hardin, the California Golden Bears weren't able to overcome a few three-point shots that rimmed out, some bewildering officiating that plagued both teams, and a career game from Joe Wolfinger in losing to Washington 87-84 at Haas Pavilion on Saturday. Vierneisel led the Bears' plus/minus with a +6, while Ryan Anderson was close behind with a +4. With Patrick Christopher not starting because of an ankle sprain, both Vierneisel and Jerome Randle stepped up to help give the Bears some offensive punch in the backcourt. However, the Huskies were able to create mismatches all afternoon long, whether it was Quincy Pondexter taking advantage of having a smaller man on him, players recognizing double teams and finding an open man who was often underneath the basket, or catching the Bears' defense just out of shape enough for Washington to rotate the ball to an open Appleby. Even if Appleby's wide open for just two shots, there's a good chance that'll end up being six points.
