Galas Talks About His Cal Commitment

Every season has its share of recruiting surprises and the 2008 season was no exception for California.

The Bears had their eye early on Central Catholic center Dominick Galas. The 6-1/275 three star center plowed through the competition all year with the Raider’s excellent season culminating in a hard-fought loss in the state championship vs. St. Bonaventure.

As the son of former Cal offensive lineman Tim Galas, Galas grew up following the Bears and hoping for the opportunity to play in Strawberry Canyon.

“Growing up, we went to 2 or 3 games a year and it was always somewhere that I wanted to play,” said Galas.

“The opportunity to check out some other schools during the process has been a good experience, too, though so I could see what else was out there.”

With the Bears not offering early in the recruiting season, a number of teams stepped into the gap and Galas turned his attention outside of the state, eventually accepting an offer to play for Oregon State.

However, after seeing how their scholarship allocation was shaping up and having a commitment from just a single offensive lineman in Pleasant Valley offensive tackle Tyler Rigsbee, the Bears decided to turn their sights back on Galas and began their pursuit of the powerful center in earnest, offering Galas a scholarship and re-entering the picture.

With his prior commitment to the Beavers, Galas had begun to become emotionally invested with Oregon State. Switching his commitment to the Bears wasn’t an easy process and one he did not rush into.

“I made my commitment to Oregon State, but ultimately I felt like Cal was the best place for me overall with the coaches, the facilities and the staff so I think it’s a really good fit,” said Galas.

Growing up with the football tradition in his family, Galas learned his lessons well.

“I think my style of play reflects the way my dad and grandpa always talked about the game having both played football themselves –play till the echo of the whistle. Play nasty, play mean. Especially not being the biggest guy –I really don’t think a couple of inches mean much when you put on the pads. I just try to really get after it every play.”

One of the state’s top wrestlers as the #2 rated heavyweight in the state with a perfect 34-0 record to date, Galas continues the Bear tradition with top wrestlers donning the blue and gold.

“I think the way you’re able to control your body and weight and maintain your balance are all things that having a wrestling background helps with,” said Galas. “With a better base, when you’re in awkward positions, it really can give you and advantage against other players.

“Against St. Bonaventure, we played against some pretty big linemen. But the bigger guys don’t tend to fire out as much and are more upright so it’s almost easier to get beneath their numbers at the point of attack.”

Along with joining the Bears’ tradition of outstanding wrestlers playing on the offensive line for Cal, Galas will also perpetuate the recent run of Central Catholic players to wear the blue and gold, with former fullback and special teams All Pac 10 playerByron Storer as well as senior linebacker Justin Moye having paved the way for Galas.

“I think this is a great opportunity for me at Cal,” said Galas. “I can’t wait to get in there and start working. It’s a great program”
