Chris and Steve, the show's producers, communicated with us recently about publishing some video clips of their past work at this website - and three clips that are relevant to the UCLA game this weekend are linked here.
We asked for a short note about the Bear Territory broadcasts - and what the two producers are doing these days. Here is their response.
Way back in time, there were two strapping, young Cal chaps who were perturbed by the mainstream media's treatment of the California Golden
Bears. Despite various ups and downs for Cal during those years, Chris and Steve didn't understand why the Greatest University of All Time's sporting
teams weren't consistently given the glowing reviews that were deserved.
So they started their own show - Bear Territory. Without any knowledge of video production, or even a modicum of acting talent for that matter, Chris
and Steve used credit cards to fund and put forth an "honest" Cal sports show on public access.
Nobody's sure how or why, but the show was picked up by SportsChannel (which morphed into FoxSports Net). Stranger than that, the show went on to win an Emmy, though a combination of bribery and blackmail are suspected.
The Bear Territory production team is now considering, pending interest, releasing a Platinum Collector's Limited Edition Box Set of DVDs of the two seasons of the show for public consumption. The release would coincide with the approaching Umpteenth Anniversary of Bear Territory's conception.
They'd also like to pass the torch, and to help relaunch the show under the stewardship of some yet-to-be-discovered Cal students.
Chris lives in Connecticut with his wife and 3 kids. Through a carefully calculated combination of Slingbox, Pay Per View, New York Alumni gatherings, and about 3 road trips a year, he continues to see every Cal game. He still does some work in TV as well as other production work, writing, and game publishing.
Unfortunately, he still talks to Steve almost every day though they are no longer housemates as they were when they filmed Bear Territory. He's unclear on why Steve has only uploaded Bear Territory clips that seem to feature Steve.
Steve now lives in San Francisco, where he washes dishes for the aforementioned credit card companies. He continues his investigation into the Referees Against Cal conspiracy theory. He's only uploaded Bear Territory segments featuring himself, because Chris seemed to be holding the camera whenever the good stuff happened. And he's a
megalomaniac. (Chris wrote that) (No I didn't).
Steve also provided a few comments on the three videos linked here:
Previous to the start of the season, a new Cal "song" was released, presumably to get the kids all fired up with its in-your-face, cool, hip, rap-style, funkiness. It was regrettably titled "Here Comes Da Bear," and included a reference to a "Bruin biscuit" stuck in "Da Bear's" jaw. Chris and Steve took a copy of the lyrics around campus to try to gain insight to the song's prose, and to discover the definition of this so-called, mysterious "Bruin biscuit."
