Rebel Becomes a Bear

During last summer’s Cal camp, there was a pair of receivers that instantly stood out. One of those receivers made an early commitment to Cal, Saratoga WR Alex Lagemann. He and the second receiver quickly struck up a friendship and found areas in each other’s games they admired and emulated. Today, the second of the two Cal camp standouts committed to the Bears as well.

3 star San Lorenzo (CA) High School receiver Mike Calvin informed Cal coaches today that he’d be joining the Bears.

“I made my final decision last night and I told my coach today that I wanted to pull the trigger and get the recruiting process over with,” said Calvin. I really enjoyed the whole process and it was a great experience to go through. Not many players get the opportunity to experience what I’ve been through.

“One major factor in my decision is when I went to the Cal 3 day and 1 day camps, I got to know lot about the Cal coaching staff, especially the wide receiver Coach Dan Ferrigno. We talk all the time. We get along just like friends. He was able to help take my game to a different level. He helped me a lot with sticking my routes. Just the things he taught me at Cal camp helped me out a whole lot during the season.

“Also, Coach Tedford is great. He sat down with my parents and talked with them about the academic course load and what to expect. They were impressed and they’ve always gone with Cal with Cal the whole time.”

Statistically, Calvin had an excellent year, although his San Lorenzo squad had a disappointing season at 3-7. On the year, Calvin had 37 receptions for 794 yards and 9 td receptions along with 11 carries for 137 yards and another 3 tds on offense.

Calvin also excelled on defense at safety with 50 tackles and 5 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles on the year.

“I think it’s so great to be able to stay home and play in front of my friends and family,” said Calvin. “It’s only around 20 minutes away. Anyone who came to see me as a Rebel can come support me as a Bear.

“I just made the commitment after school today and the word got out so fast,” laughed Calvin. “My school and my teammates are really happy with my decision and that they’ll be able to continue to see me play and root for me."

At 6-3/199 with a 41 inch vertical and a 4.48 forty measured at Cal’s camp, many Bear fans are as excited to see Calvin in Blue and Gold as his friends and family.
