Philip Named a Rimington Trophy Finalist

Center Marvin Philip

DALLAS, Texas – Cal senior center Marvin Philip has been named as one of six finalists for the Dave Rimington Trophy, which is presented to the nation's top center.

This is the second consecutive year that Philip has been a finalist for the Rimington award.

Other finalists include Mike Degory (Florida), Greg Eslinger (Minnesota), Mark Fenton (Colorado), Nick Mangold (Ohio State) and Dan Mozes (West Virginia).

Philip has anchored a line that helped Cal post the No. 10 rushing attack in the country. The Cameron Park, Calif., native is a two-time All-Pac-10 selection at center. In 2005, Philip led Cal in pancake blocks with 25 and finished second on the team with 32 knockdowns, starting every game despite a season of bumps and bruises.

Philip, who was also on the preseason watch list for the Outland Trophy, was named The Sporting News' No. 1 center in the country in the preseason. Philip started several games as a true freshman in 2002. He missed the 2001 and 2002 seasons while completing his Mormon mission. The Oak Ridge HS grad regained the starting job nine games into the 2003 season.

The winner of the 2005 Rimington Trophy will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 8 and is selected by determining the consensus All-American center pick from four existing All America Teams: the American Football CoachesAssociation, the Walter Camp Foundation, The Sporting News and the Football Writers Association of America.

The winner will be honored at the awards banquet at the Rococo Theater in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Jan. 7, 2006. The featured speakers at the banquet will be coach John Gagliardi and Heisman Trophy Winner John Cappelletti.
