Fun With Numbers - Cal vs. Cal Poly (BB)

With 13:23 left and Cal leading Cal Poly 48-34, it appeared that the Golden Bears had begun to put some distance between themselves and the Mustangs and could cruise to an opening-game victory. For a little while, at least. By the time the game's final minute came, the Bears were hanging by a claw until a follow shot with five seconds left by Nick Enzweiler, a Mustang player who once desperately wanted to be a Bear, gave Cal Poly the 63-62 win.

Shot Clock

As an experiment, I tried to keep track of when in the shot clock each player shot - to see if some players tended to shoot earlier in the clock than others or if some people tended to shoot later. This isn't easy to keep track of, and I'm not comfortable enough with the accuracy of the data to the point of preparing a chart. But some observations: in the first half, the Bears let the shot clock run under 10 seconds on four occassions - three times, Midgley took the shot, one time Kately did; in the second half the Bears last four shots were: a shot by Diggs with one second on the shot clock, a follow rebound basket by Powe, a shot by Bond with one second left on the shot clock, a missed jumper by Kately with 13 seconds left on the shot clock, and a last second attempt by Midgley; between the first and second halves, Tamir went 14:54 without taking a shot, then during a five possession span, took sots with 24, 32, 25, and 24 seconds left in the shot clock, making the second (which came on a fast break) and fourth shots.

This box came out of a combination of watching a bunch of Gonzaga games and a discussion with Cyberbear Sdekk during a Cal game at Rickey's last January. At last year's Maui Invitational, Gonzaga power forward Ronny Turiaf scored 60 points in three games - with a whopping 39 of them coming on free throws. Maybe he has a post game, maybe he doesn't but he did show gifts for: a) drawing fouls and making it easy for refs to see that he was getting fouled, b) getting opposing big men into foul trouble and c) making free throws. And if one looked at Gonzaga's box scores throughout the year, he did this all season long - although his success wasn't quite as extreme as it was in Maui. But with as many awkward big men, it would seem that with just a little sleight of hand, a pump fake or two, and a subtle lean, that it shouldn't be that hard to get seven to 10 gift free throw attempts a game. If your big men shoot free throws well, then you'd want to encourage this - especially if the offense has fallen into a lull and the half-court offense is struggling to get shots. During the course of the year, keep an eye on whether Powe and Tamir's FT% can climb into the 20s - and we'll keep track of how ol' Ronny is doing in Spokane.

Later in the season, we'll explore guards and three-point shooting.

TP - total points; 2pt. - points scored on 2 pt. field goals; 3pt. - points scored on 3 pt. field goals; FT - points scored on free throws; 2pt% - % of points scored on 2 pt field goals, 3pt - % of points scored on 3 pt. field goals, FT% - % of points scored on free throws; LYFT - last year's % of points scored on free throws

For the first time in Cal's three games, the starting lineup wasn't the lineup that received the most playing time. Diggs played a frenetic opening minute of the second half, making a three-pointer, stealing the ball and scoring again putting Cal up by 11 at 37-26. At that point, with 18:59 left, Coach Braun put in Ubaka to give Diggs a chance to catch his breath.

Cal's four freshman played together with Famulener for stretches in the first and second halves. In the first half, they were on-court together for 3:27 and held Cal Poly scoreless (4-0), in the second half they were oncourt together for 1:18 and were outscored 3-2.

The Golden Bears also tried having Diggs and Ubaka oncourt together for 1:19 of the second half. Cal was outscored 2-1, at which point McGuire and Smith were brought onto replace those two. McGuire and Smith were oncourt for 3:09 and were outscored 8-6 until Ubaka came back in to replace Smith.
