Gibson to Medically Retire
After converting to a defensive back to help with depth last season, Gibson was expected to challenge at outside linebacker this year, but he was unable to recover from lisfranc surgery.
“He has worked incredibly hard to come back, and it’s just been really painful and he’s had a hard time doing it,” Dykes said. “I’m proud of him for working hard and trying to rehab it. I hate it for him.”
Gibson, out of Gardena (Calif.) Serra, was recruited as a defensive end/outside linebacker, the No. 10-ranked outside linebacker of the 2011 class and a four-star prospect.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder earned one varsity letter, playing in six games as a sophomore in 2013.
Gibson redshirted in 2011, and in 2012, did not play due to a season-ending injury suffered during fall camp. As a redshirt sophomore, he missed spring practices due to injury, but recorded three tackles against Ohio State and one at Stanford.
He missed all of spring ball due to injury.
“He’s going to graduate this spring, so he’ll apply for a medical hardship, and we expect he’ll get it,” Dykes said. “I hate it for him. He’s a good kid. I know he was a very highly-recruited player coming out of high school and just had a hard time staying healthy and had some bad luck.”
