NFTC: Simms Heating Up
Simms is one of the state's top sprinters – with a 10.8 100-meter time – and he may not have hit the finish line, quite yet.
On Monday, California head coach Sonny Dykes and Simms touched base, and the Golden Bears' skipper told Simms that his speed "can't be taught," and that he wanted to see what Simms could do for the Bear Raid, in person, at the Cal camp in
"[He said] that they need that there, [and are] always looking for it," Simms said. "He also asked me where I wanted to go to college."
Dykes also personally invited Simms to Cal's camp in June, where the coaches will be able to fully evaluate the speedy defensive back/running back. Simms told BearTerritory that Berkeley is the dream, "since my bro [Brendan] Bigelow went there."
This weekend, Simms ran a 4.4-second 40, laser timed, and a 4.34 shuttle at the SPARQ testing, and it's his speed that's drawn more than just Cal's attention. Arizona State is also coming in strong, and could offer before the end of June.
"I've just got to go down there and do well at their camp on June 15," Simms said. "Washington State told me they were excited about me. UTEP told me that I'm better than anybody else on their current roster, and that they're moving towards an offer, so they want me to come to camp to speed up the process. I've heard from Washington, too, and he said he didn't care how tall I was; if I could play, I could play."
