Beasley Talks Cal Offer
The 6-foot-3, 170-pounder out of Alpharetta (Ga.) St. Francis added offers from Florida State, Texas Tech and California on Sunday, following offers from Georgia, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss and St. John's in the previous four days.
The offer from the Golden Bears was not entirely surprising, given that the new coaching staff -- Tracy Webster and head coach Cuonzo Martin -- had offered Beasley while still at Tennessee.
"They're both really cool," Beasley said before he boarded his plane back home. "I like them as coaches. They're pretty cool. They're good coaches, because they communicate well, and they went to the Sweet Sixteen last year."
This weekend was Beasley's first time in Northern California ("It's beautiful," he said), and he said that distance may wind up being a factor, but that's anything but definite.
"Distance is kind of a factor, because of my family, but if it's the right school, that doesn't matter; if it's far, it's far," Beasley said. "If it's the right school, then it's the right school."
Beasley admittedly doesn't know much about Berkeley, but he knows what kind of program Martin is looking to build at Cal.
"It's going to be huge," Beasley said. "It may take a couple years, it might take one year, but they're going to do really well."
The Bears particularly like the Georgia Stars' standout's scoring ability, and his ability to be a leader on the court.
"They like my ability to find a way to win," Beasley said. "It was tough this weekend, because we didn't have a lot of chemistry, but once we get together, we'll be fun."
Beasely likes the type of offense that Martin ran at Tennessee, and is expected to bring with him to Berkeley.
"He speeds the ball up, and I play in a motion offense, like that one," Beasley said.
Beasley gets mostly A's and B's in school, and says that athletics and academics are of equal import.
"It's kind of both; I just want to be successful," Beasley said.
