Tate Confirmed as New DL Coach

Cal has finished a three-month overhaul of its defensive staff with the announcement that Fred Tate will be joining the Bears as defensive line coach, and that Andy Buh will be reassigned within the athletic department.

As expected, California has announced that Fred Tate will join the staff as the defensive line coach under new defensive coordinator Art Kaufman, completing the defensive staff overhaul that began on Jan. 8 with the announcement that defensive backs coach Randy Stewart and defensive tackles coach Barry Sacks would not be returning.

The Bears announced that former defensive coordinator Andy Buh -- who presided over the worst statistical defense in program history during last season's 1-11 campaign -- would be moved to a position "within the Athletic Department."

As part of the move, Cal also confirmed that former defensive ends coach Garret Chachere will move back to coaching linebackers, which he has done for much of his 23-year coaching career, including a three-year stint at Nichols State (1995-97) and eight seasons at Tulane (1999-2006).

"Fred Tate comes highly recommended from Art Kaufman and the two have had an excellent relationship in the past," head coach Sonny Dykes said in a release. "He has a tremendous amount of energy that will carry over well to both on-field coaching and recruiting."

Tate, who was let go along with Kaufman by the Bearcats after last season, coached defensive tackles during the 2013 season.

"I'm excited to be joining Sonny's staff at Cal and be reunited with Art," Tate said. "We've had a tremendous amount of success over the last two seasons working together, and I'm looking forward to replicating that and improving upon it at Cal. I'm ready to hit the ground running."

Cincinnati's defense was one of the best in the country, ranking in the top 10 nationally in both rushing defense (6th, 104.5 ypg) and total defense (9th, 315.6 ypg).

Tate also worked on Kaufman's defensive staff at Texas Tech in 2012, inheriting a 2011 unit that ranked 114th nationally in total defense (485.58 ypg) and improving them to 38th (367.31 ypg) while ranking second in the Big 12 Conference. Texas Tech was keyed by a pass defense that led the league and ranked 15th in the country (192.00 ypg). The Red Raiders finished 8-5 overall and were victorious over Minnesota at the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Tate's other previous coaching stints have come at Marshall (2010-11), Tennessee-Chattanooga (2008-09), Southern Miss (2005-06), East Carolina (2003-04), Middle Tennessee State (2002), Southwest Texas State (2001), East Mississippi Community College (2000), Jacksonville State (1998-99) and East Central Community College (1997).

Marshall was victorious in the Beef ‘O' Brady's Bowl over Florida International in Tate's final season with the Thundering Herd when he coached the defensive line for a unit that ranked first in Conference USA and fifth nationally with an average of 7.85 tackles for loss per game. Tate coached safeties in his first season with the Herd in 2010.

Tate coached on bowl staffs during each of his two seasons at Southern Miss with the Golden Eagles also finishing with winning records each campaign.

A native of Hattiesburg, Miss., Tate enlisted in the United States Army upon graduation in 1986 from North Forrest High School in his hometown. Following his service, Tate started his collegiate football playing career with two seasons at East Central Community College and continued at Southern Mississippi, where he was a defensive lineman in 1995 and 1996 for the Golden Eagles before earning his bachelor's degree in human performance from Southern Miss in 1997.
