REPORT: Bears Hire Tate
FootballScoop also reported earlier this week what BearTerritory had predicted at the beginning of February, that former defensive coordinator Andy Buh and his $500,000 annual salary would no longer be on the Cal coaching staff for 2014, and that he would leave before spring ball. That has come to pass, according to FootballScoop, but Cal Athletics said that the team has announcement on either that front or the hiring of Tate.
As BT reported just over a month ago, Kaufman had his own defensive line coach in mind, who he wanted to bring in, and he has done just that. Kaufman and Tate worked together last season at Cincinnati, where Tate coached defensive tackles, and at Texas Tech in 2012.
Tate is a 16-year veteran of the coaching ranks, and was let go from the Bearcats at the same time as Kaufman. He has coached defensive tackles, the defensive line as a whole, outside linebackers and special teams during his coaching career, which also includes stints at Southern Miss, Marshall, Middle Tennessee State and East Carolina.
Tate was a coach at Middle Tennessee during the same time as running backs coach Pierre Ingram was a wide receiver for the Blue Raiders (2002).
With the report that Tate will take the defensive line job, it is expected that the Bears will move former defensive ends coach Garret Chachere to the linebackers coaching job, completing an overhaul of the defensive staff that began when Cal announced on Jan. 8 that defensive backs coach Randy Stewart and defensive tackles coach Barry Sacks would not be returning.
The Bears currently have no announcement on any part of the recent news – Buh moving to an administrative position, the move of Chachere to linebackers (which was confirmed by several non-team sources) or the hiring of Tate.
