The day before National Signing Day, the California football team officially adds defensive backs coach Greg Burns, who has two BCS titles under his belt with a Pac-12 rival.

UPDATE 5:54 pm: Cal has officially announced the hiring of Burns.

MESSAGE BOARDS: What does an expert think about the Burns hire?

BERKELEY -- A source close to the California football team said the team is expected to announce today that its new defensive backs coach under defensive coordinator Art Kaufman will be Pac-12 coaching veteran Greg Burns.

FootballScoop.com first reported the hire, which has yet to be confirmed by the Bears, though an announcement on a hiring was confirmed for later on Tuesday.

Burns coached defensive backs at Massachusetts last season, and Purdue before that, where three of he Boilermakers’ five players named to Big 10 All-Conference teams came from his secondary. Prior to those stops. Burns coached defensive backs at Arizona State from 2008-11 and Kansas State in 2007.

Burns joined the Purdue staff after spending the previous four seasons (2008-11) as the cornerbacks coach at Arizona State. The Sun Devils led the Pac-10 and finished among the nation's top units in 2009 in total defense (No. 13 NCAA, 297.58 ypg), rushing defense (No. 19 NCAA, 108.58 ypg) and passing defense (No. 26 NCAA, 189.00 ypg). Arizona State also led the conference in rushing defense and was No. 16 nationally (119.67 ypg) the following season in 2010, while also ranking second in the league and among the nation’s top units in tackles for loss (No. 8 NCAA, 7.42 tflpg), pass efficiency defense (No. 20 NCAA, 108.58) and scoring defense (No. 26 NCAA, 21.08 ppg). Omar Bolden was a first-team All-Pac-10 selection in 2010 and selected in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos.

He spent one season coaching defensive backs in the NFL in 2006 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, following a 2002-05 stint at USC under Pete Carroll, which included two BCS title seasons and two All-American safeties.

During his 1998-2001 stint with Louisville, Burns coached six all-conference cornerbacks.

The Brooklyn, N.Y.-born coach graduated from Washington State, earning four letters and earning All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention offers as a sophomore. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant in Pullman, before moving on to coach DBs full time at Idaho in 1997.

A source told BearTerritory that Burns was hired on Monday night.

During his 17-year coaching career, Burns has coached in 10 bowl games, including four BCS Bowl Games and two national title games. Notable pupils of Burns include Troy Polamalu, Darnel Bing, Antonio Roundtree and Ronde Barber. He also coached All-Pac-10 cornerback Will Poole in 2003.
