Every Friday FOXSportsWest.com streams four games from Southern California. Here is a look at the teams and players to watch this week.
Friday 9/20 Mission Viejo @ La Habra 7:00 PM Live
Mission Viejo looked terrific against East Coast power Don Bosco Prep last week. Quarterback Ian Fieber (San Jose State) showed off a strong arm and good vision as he hit several targets including Boise State verbal commitment Sean Modster. La Habra was dominating for a half against La Mirada and hung on to win thanks to a huge play by linebacker Alex Bush. Boise State commitment Greg Gaines is impressive at defensive tackle, and for fun, he gets some carries at fullback. Gaines is 6'1/295. USC commitment Toa Lobendahn didn't play two weeks ago on Prepzone, but he should be ready to play offensive line for the Highlanders.
Prediction: La Habra looked big, fast, and strong earlier this year on Prepzone. Mission Viejo plays a swarming style of defense that not many teams are used to seeing in the Southern Section. The Diablos need to establish a running game as they were unable to run when they needed to against Don Bosco Prep. This should be a very good game and a great measuring stick for La Habra, but in the end, Mission Viejo wins a close one.
Friday 9/20 Centennial @ Alemany 7:00 PM Live Stream
It's out of the fire and in to the frying pan for Centennial as they're coming off of their first loss against Long Beach Poly. The Huskies are still a juggernaut on offense with quarterback Robert Webber using his arm and legs to hurt opponents, and running back Tre Watson (Cal) should find more open running lanes against Alemany than he did against the Jackrabbits. UCLA receiver commitment Barry Ware also looks to rebound after being held without a catch by Iman Marshall and Poly. Viane Talamaivao (Alabama) is a people mover on the offensive line. The defense led by yet another Boise State commitment Jaylen Johnson began to gel against Poly.
Alemany's defense has gotten off to a great start in its first three games. Defensive back Quentin Tartabull spearheads the defense this year, and next year he's headed to Cal. Quarterback Alif Grayes is a steady hand with a good arm and quick release. He has a host of weapons to throw to including the nation's No. 3 junior receiver Desean Holmes.
Prediction: Alemany plays one of the toughest schedules in the Southern Section, and they're going to have their hands full with Centennial. The Warriors are a very good team, but there are few teams who can match the speed and size of Long Beach Poly, and that's what they're going to need to slow down the Huskies enough to outscore them. Centennial gets back on track and hands Alemany their first loss.
Friday 9/20 San Dimas @ Monrovia 7:00 PM Live Stream
Running back Kurt Scoby has been elusive on and off the field in his career. Scoby attended several schools as a junior before settling with Monrovia as a senior. Scoby has already paid big dividends for the Wildcats as he's rushed for over 400 yards in Monrovia's first two games.
Prediction: Scoby should run for another 200 yards against San Dimas as Monrovia wins big.
Friday 9/20 Quartz Hill @ Canyon Country Canyon 7:00 PM Live Stream
Colorado commitment Cade Apsay leads Canyon Country. He lost his top receiver to graduation, but he had found a new connection with junior Liam Cabrera who has over 200 yards in Canyon Country's first two games.
Prediction: Apsay should have a big night against an overmatched Quartz Hill squad who will be lucky to keep it close.
