Winchester Calls Cal 'Win-Win'

Cornerback Jeremy Winchester talks with BearTerritory about his commitment to the Golden Bears, bolstering an already strong defensive back class.

After holding back for two months, Klein (Tex.) Klein Collins cornerback Jeremy Winchester was finally ready to make things public, and on Monday – as California starts game-week preparation for the 2013 opener against Northwestern – the 6-foot, 170-pound defender publicly committed to the Golden Bears.

"It feels amazing," Winchester said. "There's really nothing that can not make you attracted to the school. It's always going to be a win-win with the academic and athletic combination that they have as a program."

Winchester boasted offers from BYU – who Cal recently announced it would face in a 2014/2017 home-and-home series – as well as Colorado, Duke, Fresno State, Houston, Illinois, Kansas, Texas State, Utah and UTEP.

When did Winchester know that the Bears were the program for him?

"At the beginning of August, maybe August 3 or August 4, it's been a little while," he said.

Winchester will make his official visit on Nov. 14, when the Bears square off against Ohio State.

Winchester adds to an already strong defensive backs class for Cal, with Mission Hills (Calif.) Bishop Alemany safety Quentin Tartabull, four-star Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco cornerback Jaleel Wadood and three-star Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame safety Koa Farmer.

Winchester earned first-team all-district honors as a junior – his first year playing defense -- splitting time between cornerback and free safety, tallying one pick and over 50 tackles for the 8-3 Tigers, who fell to The Woodlands in the first round of the playoffs.
