Starting middle linebacker Nick Forbes notched three tackles on Saturday in Cal's second scrimmage of the spring, heading up the defense at middle linebacker.
BERKELEY
--
California
starting middle linebacker
Nick Forbes
notched just three tackles on Saturday during the Bears' second scrimmage of the spring, but despite what he and head coach
Sonny Dykes
called "vanilla" defense, the players are taking well to defensive coordinator
Andy Buh
's new scheme.
Defensive tackle
Deandre Coleman
continues to have a stellar spring after moving inside from defensive end, tallying four tackles, including 1.0 TFL (a sack for -3 yards). Four other Bears --
Nathan Broussard
,
Jalen Jefferson
,
Hardy Nickerson
and
Avery Sebastian
had four tackles apiece.
Nickerson had a nice stop on quarterback
Jared Goff
, who gained three yards on a zone read before being spun to the ground by the redshirt freshman linebacker, who's NFL-great father was in the stands, watching, along with former Cal and Major League baseball player Jerry Goff -- Jared's father.
While he didn't show up much on the defensive stat list,
Stefan McClure
made his presence felt in the secondary, jamming up physical
Maurice Harris
so hard on a third-and-nine attempt by
Kyle Boehm
that the pass sailed a good 10 yards beyond Harris's hands.
McClure also teamed up with Sebastian to take down
Jeffrey Coprich
on a first-and-10 run after the redshirt freshman running back stiff-armed
Dan Camporeale
for a gain of five.
Interior defensive lineman
Harrison Wilfley
tallied a QB hurry on Goff's final drive.
Cornerback
Cedric Dozier
and safety
Michael Lowe
each had two tackles, while
Viliami Moala
tallied a sack on
Zach Kline
after he faked a handoff to
Lucas Gingold
.
