We take a look at Cal's latest wide receiver commit -- Jack Austin out of Chino Hills (Calif.) -- as…
Beyond the Commitment: Jack Austin
"It was not easy, that's for sure," Austin said on Monday. "This whole process has been a long one, but I think I did what's best for me in the end, and that's what matters most. It's definitely a decision that's going to affect the rest of my life, so I think I did the right thing."
The Golden Bears coaching staff has been on Austin for about thee weeks, trying to get the 6-foot-3, 205-pound big-bodied receiver to even consider Cal.
"Actually, it started three weeks ago, when coach [Tony] Franklin called me and he invited me to come and meet a couple of the coaches," Austin said. "Over the last three weeks, they've been in contact with me, and been very inviting and when coach Dykes invited me up on an official visit, I couldn't pass it up. That's when I made the decision to go up."
Once he got into Berkeley, the spell was cast.
"I think the second day, we did the campus tour, and I don't think I've ever seen a campus as amazing as Cal-Berkeley is, and the atmosphere that Cal presents is very easy to fit into, and I like that a lot about it," said Austin, who said he wants to major in psychology.
"I got to speak to coach [Rob] Likens -- the wide receivers coach -- and he was really insightful," Austin said. "I got to learn more about him and about how he's going to teach and how the program's going to work. I got to talk to coach Dykes on the last day of my trip, which was when I verbally committed to Cal."
What was Dykes's reaction?
"He was actually surprised," Austin said. "I don't think he had any idea it was coming. He even said to me that he didn't so I think it was a pleasant surprise to him."
One of Austin's fellow official visitors -- Vince Johnson -- gushed about Austin's commitment before he officially announced it, Sunday afternoon.
"He's a baller," Johnson said. "I'm pretty sure he committed to Cal when we were there, this weekend, so it'll be nice to have him on campus."
