Semper Fi VIDEO: Devin Ross
SANTA ANA, Calif. -- Three-star wide receiver Devin Ross is still committed to Colorado, for now, but another Pac-12 school is coming on strong for the Semper Fidelis All-American: California.
"I started talking to them probably two weeks ago," Ross said. "Coach [Sonny] Dykes messaged me on Facebook, and we've been talking ever since."
During the first few days of All-American practice for the West squad, Ross has gotten the chance to catch balls from future Bears quarterback Jared Goff, and he's been able to bend Goff's ear a bit about what the new offense will look like under Dykes and offensive coordinator Tony Franklin. The long and the short of it: Cal is going to need wide receivers.
"I've been interested in Cal before, but I just didn't think they were interested in me," Ross said. "So, I hadn't pushed as much, but now, I feel like he's a really good coach. He came from Louisiana Tech, and I know they were a high-powered offense and passing out of the spread, and that's what I like, so I'm very interested in them, now."
The Bears haven't offered, but are very close.
"[Dykes] wants to see my highlight tape, and I'm going to send that to him as soon as I get back from this," Ross said. "They've seen my junior highlights, and they've seen a little bit of what I can do, but they want to see more of me, because I didn't even play that much last year, so they want to see more of me this year."
As a junior Ross played primarily defensive back for Mission Hills (Calif.) Bishop Alemany, but switched to receiver full-time in 2012.
"It's fun," Ross said of playing offense. "I like playing receiver. DB is really fun also, but I like receiver more. I just like to be the point-scorer."
The Bears, though, aren't the only team getting in on things with the Buffaloes commit. Ross says that he's heard from Northwestern and Utah. With both Berkeley and the Wildcats involved, Ross certainly has the academic bona fides, with a 3.4 cumulative GPA.
