A Look Back: 1993 UA vs. ASU

Dick Tomey

As Friday's game between Arizona and Arizona State gets closer, we take a look at some classic games. Read on for a look at Arizona's 1993 victory over the Sun Devils.

Arizona went into the 1993 rivalry game at ASU with a lot of motivation. Arizona's Desert Swarm defense led the Wildcats all season long, and one more win would boost the Cats' ranking and set up a major bowl invitation.

ASU went into the game with a 6-4 record and was led by legendary Amphi running back Mario Bates.

Both teams failed to score in the first quarter and went into the second quarter looking for some offensive consistency. ASU got on the board first courtesy of a Mario Bates short touchdown run. Arizona's star running back Chuck Levy responded with his own touchdown scamper, resulting in a 7-7 tie going into the half.

ASU jumped out to a 10-7 lead early in the second half, but that would be the Sun Devils' last lead of the game.

Arizona quarterback Dan White responded with a 13 yard touchdown toss to Richard Dice and then linked up with Troy Dickey for two long touchdowns in the fourth quarter, helping Arizona cruise to a 34-20 victory.

This game certainly wasn't one of the more competitive contests in the in-state rivalry, but the victory was a harbinger for much bigger things.

The Wildcats' win over ASU cleared the way for Arizona to play in a major bowl game against the most dominant program in college football during the previous 15 seasons.

Boasting a roster filled with future pros, including Ray Lewis, the Miami Hurricanes team was not lacking in talent.

Nonetheless, Arizona delivered maybe the most dominant game in school history. Arizona defenders lived in the Miami backfield the entire game, forcing the only shut out in Fiesta Bowl history.

Chuck Levy ran for a 142 yards, using the game as a springboard for his early entry into the NFL draft. Arizona won 29-0 and the game wasn't even that close.
