-Junior wide receiver Keenan Allen looked sharp in his return from off-season ankle surgery, practicing without a brace or any obvious extra tape.
-Redshirt sophomore Geoffrey Gibson took first-team reps at right guard, with redshirt senior Dominic Galas (pectoral) sidelined for three months.
-Redshirt junior defensive lineman Austin Clark had his right foot in a walking boot and did not practice. Others who missed the first day included freshman offensive tackle Christian Okafor, redshirt sophomore defensive back Adrian Lee (left shoulder), redshirt junior offensive lineman Mark Brazinski (knee surgery), and sophomore defensive back Stefan McClure (knee surgery).
-Sophomore linebacker Chris McCain came up limping during the team period and did not return.
-Redshirt freshman Joel Willis is again playing defensive back after working at wide receiver during spring practice. After dropping an interception, Willis redeemed himself a few plays later by finally picking off freshman quarterback Zach Kline.
-The five freshman wide receiver – Bryce Treggs, Chris Harper, Cedric Dozier, Darius Powe, and Kenny Lawler – all saw significant reps. With his father Brian in attendance, Treggs made several impressive catches, but also dropped a few passes.
Treggs, Harper and Powe worked with the third-unit offense during the team period. Treggs and Powe also returned punts, while Lawler and Harper spent time returning kicks.
-Arguably the most impressive newcomer was freshman punter Cole Leininger, who consistently boomed punts 50 yards and longer with ease.
-Redshirt senior Robert Mullins and senior J.P. Hurrell worked at inside linebacker with the first-team defense.
