Cal vaults to the top for Shepherd

Xavier Shepherd

Attending Cal's camp and input from teammate Darius Powe have put the Golden Bears into contention to land Lakewood (Calif.) wide receiver Xavier Shepherd.

BERKELEY, Calif. – In the span of just a few days, California has vaulted right to the head of the class for Lakewood (Calif.) wide receiver Xavier Shepherd.

"With Cal being a high education school, it comes in right at the top I have to say," Shepherd said. "Talking to (high school teammate and Class of 2012 signee) Darius (Powe) and him talking to me about Cal and giving me information I didn't get from earlier experiences, I'm really enlightened to the whole program now. It's real cool."

The Golden Bears offered Shepherd a scholarship last Thursday. He then attended their All-American Showcase on Sunday.

"Oh man, it was terrific," Shepherd said of the one-day camp. "It was a real good experience and I had a lot of good competition out here, a lot of good receivers and a lot of good DBs from what I saw. It was real fun. I like the coaching staff. They know what they are talking about, you can tell. It would be a nice coaching staff to be around, play around."

Shepherd got to work most extensive with and learn from new wide receivers coach Wes Chandler, commending the former NFL assistant for his attention to detail.

"He is terrific, a great coach," Shepherd said. "He's basically a teacher. That's what he likes to enforce. If you put what he tells you in effect, you'll come out victorious."

The admiration is mutual, as Shepherd said Chandler "likes my whole style. He likes my whole style, how I got up and get the ball, not afraid to block and never backing down, which is pretty encouraging to hear." The two spoke for several minutes at the end of the camp.

Shepherd holds offers from Oregon State, Colorado, UCLA and Utah and plans to camp with the Beavers this summer. He does not have a timetable for when he will commit, but is "pretty sure I'm going to take at least four visits."

Added Shepherd: "If I like what I see, maybe I'll commit."
