Coaches make their pitch for Armstead

Defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi has California in the mix for five-star Elk Grove (CA) Pleasant Grove lineman Arik Armstead.

As Thanksgiving gave way to Black Friday, the end of college football's regular season has led to a wave of in-home recruiting visits. But instead of lining up to buy discounted televisions and sweaters, coaches from across the nation are waiting to make their pitch to Elk Grove (Calif.) Pleasant Grove lineman Arik Armstead.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly did so on Monday, Cal was represented by its defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi on Tuesday, USC defensive line coach Ed Orgeron and quarterbacks coach Clay Helton stopped by Wednesday.

Auburn will be by Friday, while Washington will get its chance next Tuesday. Arizona and new head coach Rich Rodriguez have also been in contact in hopes of getting some face time with Scout's top prospect in the Class of 2012.

"We're just kind of taking calls and setting things up," said Guss Armstead, Arik's father. "We're just listening to everybody and taking our notes."

Arik originally committed to USC in June 2010, only to rescind his verbal this past October. Since then, he and his family have tried to keep things close to the vest, all while taking official and unofficial visits.

"I think Arik is open (to everyone)," Guss said.

The Golden Bears are in the mix because of Lupoi. He has known the family since the recruitment of Arik's older brother, Armond, now a defensive tackle at USC.

"Tosh has been there since (Arik was in) ninth grade," Guss said. "Cal has done a good job recruiting him. They have definitely been there the whole time."

Lupoi tried to sell the Armsteads on the great success Cal has had developing defensive ends Cameron Jordan and Tyson Alualu into first-round draft picks.

Arik is tentatively scheduled to make an official visit to Texas next weekend, but that could change if Pleasant Grove makes a CIF state bowl game.

Pleasant Grove faces Granite Bay in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I final Saturday afternoon at Sacramento State.
